3 Easy Steps to a Valentine's Themed Writing Center with FREE vocabulary cards

A writing center does not have to be complicated!  Follow these 3 easy steps to an engaging writing center that your students are sure to love!

Step 1-- Add Vocabulary Cards:
Kindergarten students often need prompts to help with their writing.  It can seem daunting for them to spell certain words that some children just give up instead of trying.  Using vocabulary cards fixes this problem!  It gives them gentle scaffolding in their writing without you having to be right there to guide them.  Cut out these FREE colorful Valentine's Day vocabulary cards and add them to your center.

This FREE resource includes 10 different Valentine's Day themed vocabulary cards.  Click here to download:  Free Valentine's Day Vocabulary Cards

Step 2--Add Colorful Writing Utensils
Time to bust out those pink and red markers, colored pencils, crayons, or pens.  It may seem simple, but just by switching out plain, old pencils, your students will be more enticed to write (and keep writing).

Step 3-- Finish with Some Envelopes!
What is more lovely during Valentine's Day time than to send a Valentine to someone else.  Just give your kiddos some blank envelopes so they can "address" them to a friend or family member (or maybe their fav teacher!).  My students absolutely love this part of our writing center.  It shows students that writing has a purpose and they are actual writers!

That's it! Easy as 1,2, and 3!  Be sure to comment down below if you use our FREE Valentine's Day vocabulary cards.  Happy Valentine's Day!

$1 Valentine's Day Sentence Cut and Paste

I love teaching with themes in my classroom.  One theme that warms my heart each year is our Valentine's Day unit.  The pinks, the reds, the hearts...it makes this teacher feel all the warm fuzzies.  If this February you want to have a Valentine's themed unit then you need to add this $1 deal!

My Valentine's Day Cut and Paste is a great resource to practice reading and writing with your students.  You can use this in a center, small group, or send home as homework.  What I love most about this resource is the fact that students can do this totally independent!

I always use this resource in a center.  I HAVE to have centers in my class that are not only aligned to content standards, but are also engaging and not complicated.  I find that when my centers are simple and straight forward it drastically cuts down on the time my reading groups are interrupted.

Another plus of this center for me is the EASY PREP!  No printing on card stock, cutting, and laminating here.  Just make copies and throw in a tub with some scissors, glue sticks, and crayons.  Easy peasy center prep!

Do you want to get your hands on this $1 deal?  Click on the link below!!

5 Ways to use a

 Winter Emergent Reader

There are so many ways to integrate this emergent reader into your classroom! Keep reading for the top 5 ways to do so!

1.  USE TO TEACH OR REVIEW SIGHT WORDS
Introduce or review sight words "is" and "here" (they repeat on each page).  After reading, have students go through the book and circle or underline the words in the text!

2.  USE AS A SHARED READING
This resource includes colored picture cards that you can use in a pocket chart or on anchor chart paper.  You can point under each word and read the story with your class.  This models fluency, tracking, and any other reading strategy you want to share with your kiddos!

3.  WRITING
After reading the story, use the repeated sentence structure as a model for the students' own writing.  Tell them they are going to write about things that they see in the winter.  Use the pictures throughout the book to give them ideas of things one might see during this season.

4.  BOOK BOXES/HOME LIBRARY
Guided reading books at my school have to be shared between three kindergarten classrooms.  It is really hard to hang onto books for book boxes when we must constantly share.  This printable is a great addition to your students' book box when you don't have guided reading books that you can keep in there!  You can also send this book home for students to read to their families and put in their home library (if they have one).

5.  MEANINGFUL SUB WORK
Going to be out?  Still want your students' reading and engaged?  This emergent reader is perfect for a sub!  It's easy to use, meaningful work, and students can color in the black and white pictures when finished.

I also love that this book has two copies to a page so it saves paper!  10 pages in total for your little learners!  Want to add this to your Winter Themed Unit?  Click on the link below to do so! ðŸ˜Š

 Winter Write the Room

Picture/Vocabulary Cards

Centers are one of my students' favorite time of the day!  They often refer to center time as "playtime".  That's what I consider a teacher win!  When kiddos don't realize they are learning but only think they are playing....why that is just magical!

Recording Sheet

My Write the Room center is one of reasons center time is so much fun for them!  This center gets the kids up and moving while still practicing reading and writing skills!  Plus, Write the Room is such an easy center to switch out and use with different themes throughout the year.

Our Winter Write the Room is engaging and your students can do this totally independent!  This keeps them from interrupting your reading groups.

How To Set Up This Center:
1.  Cut out the picture cards and post around the room.

2.  Give your students a clip board, pencil, and the recording sheet!

3.  Students walk around to find the different pictures on the recording sheet.  Once they find the picture, they write down the word.

4.  If they finish early, they can color in the pictures.

Want your own copy of Winter Write the Room?  Click on the link below!
Only $1.50!!!  We try to keep our prices as reasonable as possible for our fellow educators. Thank you so much if you decide to purchase and support our store! 😀

 Snowman Labeling FREEBIE

Labeling is such an important skill for a young reader and writer!  If your students are like mine, they need a re-fresher when we come back from winter break.  This cute Snowman Labeling worksheet is the perfect resource to give my young scholars a review of our labelin' skills!

I like to do this whole group.  We are lucky to have a poster maker at my school.  I make my copy poster size and give each student their own worksheet to fill out with me.  We start by reviewing what it means to label, then use beginning sounds to chose a word from the word bank.  We then check to make sure the letters in the word fit in the boxes.  So many skills to cover in one simple worksheet!

Grab your FREE copy by clicking on the link below!

Let me know in the comments how you decide to use this in your classroom!  Don't forget to check out our Teachers Pay Teachers store for more amazing Winter Resources!  Click on this link to take you to our Teachers Pay Teachers store:  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kindercounts1
